How to Get Insurance to Pay for Your Roof Replacement in Texas (Step-by-Step)
We've walked 850+ Texas homeowners through this process. Here's the exact playbook.
Texas is one of the friendliest states in the country for hail claims — the law is on your side, and every major carrier is used to paying them. Here's the process, step by step.
Step 1: Get a free roof inspection first
Do NOT file a claim before you know there's damage. Filing a claim that gets denied still counts as a claim on your record. A real roofer inspection (free with us) tells you whether damage exists before you commit to filing. You can start with our photo guide to spotting hail damage from the ground, then book a free roof inspection.
Step 2: File the claim
Call your carrier's claims line (not your agent). Give the storm date, storm type (hail or wind), and address. You'll get a claim number and an adjuster assignment usually within 48–72 hours.
Texas deadlines are typically one to two years from the date of loss. Some carriers are stricter — call as soon as you have inspector confirmation of damage.
Step 3: Meet the adjuster on the roof (with your roofer)
This is the single most important step. Adjusters are trained to spot damage, but they're human and they're on a schedule. A licensed roofer walking the roof with them ensures every hit is documented. In our experience, adjuster meetings without a roofer present pay out about 40% less on average. If the adjuster approves a tear-off, we handle the roof replacement in Plano, TX ourselves — no subcontracted crews.
Step 4: Understand RCV vs. ACV
Texas policies pay in two phases:
- ACV (Actual Cash Value) — the depreciated value of your old roof, paid up front minus your deductible. This is your first check.
- RCV (Replacement Cost Value) — the depreciation portion, released after we complete the work and submit the final invoice. This is your second check.
You are legally entitled to both. Some homeowners cash the first check and never finish the roof — that leaves the RCV money on the table. To sanity-check the numbers your carrier sends, compare them against our published 2026 roof replacement cost ranges.
Step 5: Deductible only, out of pocket
Your total out-of-pocket for a covered claim is your wind-and-hail deductible — usually 1–2% of your dwelling coverage, so $2,500–$6,000 on a typical Collin County home. That's it. No matter what the roof costs.
Note: Texas law prohibits roofers from paying, waiving, or rebating your deductible. Any roofer offering to do this is committing insurance fraud and putting you at risk. We don't. Neither should anyone else.
What if my claim gets denied?
Denied claims are often reopened successfully with a second inspection, additional photos, or a supplement request. We've reopened dozens of denied claims — most often on wind and storm damage that the first adjuster wrote off as wear and tear. Don't take the first no as the final answer.
